How To Make French Fries On The Grill

Preparing French Fries Using a Grill? Known by various names such as French fries, potato fries, or pommes frites in French, and often referred to as “More please” in my home when they are grilled, these delightful crispy potatoes are a favorite for many. Some might recognize them as “Steak Fries,” which are traditionally deep-fried until they achieve a perfect crispness before being garnished with your seasonings of choice and usually accompanied by a dollop of ketchup.

According to numerous web sources, the humble history of the original “French fry” is fairly confusing and varies. Someone must have grilled their French fries instead of deep-fried them somewhere along the way, right? Who decided to grill the first French fry and how they did it may remain a mystery, but I owe my gratitude to a true pioneer.

The term “grilled French fries” is an oxymoron because the French fries will be cooked on the grill to exceptional crispiness, making it impossible to eat just one.

 

How To Make Grilled French Fries

Potatoes are one of the most comforting, and no one can say no to them, but they may be prepared in various ways besides baking, boiling, and frying.

Idaho produces over a third of all potatoes grown in the United States, and the Russet, a starchy potato, is the most famous of them all.

Here are three different methods to grill potatoes:

To Prepare The Spice Rub To Make French Fries On The Grill

Now let us discuss some of the important ingredients that are helpful in preparing the spice rub that help to make French fries easily on the grill!

1–12 teaspoon kosher salt

12 tsp cumin powder

Also 12 teaspoon coriander powder

12 teaspoon paprika

And 12 tablespoons chili powder

12 tsp. allspice powder

12 tsp. black pepper, freshly ground

One teaspoon of sugar (optional)

To prepare the potatoes.

russet potatoes, 1 pound

Extra-virgin olive oil, used as 3 tbsp.

Directions To Make French Fries On The Grill

In a small mixing bowl, take and combine all spice rub ingredients.

Preheat a gas grill’s burners to medium-high heat, or start a charcoal grill.

Cut the potatoes into three-sided wedges lengthwise. Toss them in a medium basin with the olive oil, then season the sliced potatoes with the spice rub ingredients (you may not need all of it).

To produce a hot zone and a cool zone on a gas grill, turn one of the burners to low heat while leaving the other(s) medium-high. If you are utilizing a charcoal grill, bank the hot coals to one side of the grill to create a hotter and cooler side. (The coals should be 5 to 6 inches from the grate on the hotter side.) Keep the potatoes cut side down on the grill over the hottest area of the fire. Cover the grill (if it’s a charcoal grill, only partially cover it and leave the bottom vents exposed). Cook until the potatoes are a deep reddish-golden brown, about 4 to 6 minutes, then flip them to the other cut side. Wrap and cook for another 4 to 6 minutes, or until pleasantly browned. Transfer the potatoes to the colder side of the grill and flip them over to the skin side. Then again, cover it and cook for another 6 minutes, or until tender when poked with a sharp knife. Serve right away.

Is It Okay To Grill Frozen French Fries

On the grill, you can use frozen French fries. They might even taste better than what comes out of the oven. Frozen French fries can be grilled directly, wrapped in foil, or wrapped in foil. If your grill’s heat is easy to manage, thaw your fries on medium heat and finish grilling on medium-high heat.
