How to Grill Uncooked Brats

Grilling Uncooked Brats Guides

Are you passionate about cooking brats but puzzled over how to barbecue raw ones? Indeed! Barbecuing brats might seem straightforward, yet discovering handy tips and tricks for doing so can be unexpectedly challenging.

This article will walk you through the many steps involved in grilling uncooked brats so that you can get a beautiful brown crust with a perfectly melt-in-your-mouth center.

Now, let’s get started.

How to Grill Uncooked Brats

Most people don’t know that you can grill uncooked brats and find out when they want them for a party or cookout. But as the char and flavor are so wonderful, it can be worth waiting for the extra time required to grill them (about 10 minutes).

Things You Will Need:

  • Brats
  • Butter
  • Buns
  • Ketchup, Mustard, Mayo (feel free to mix and match)

Instructions

Start by preheating your gas or charcoal grill to 400 degrees. Also, be sure to oil the grate to keep the brats from sticking. This is especially important if you are using an oiled grate instead of a stainless steel grate.

Next, divide the grill into two temperature zones. The best way to do this is by putting a disposable aluminum pan in one half of your grill and keeping the other half free of anything except food. For example, if you have a two-burner grill, use one burner for direct heat and leave the other burner empty. If you have a three-burner grill, use the center burner for direct heat and leave the other side empty.

Once your grill is preheated and divided into two temperature zones, place a sheet of aluminum foil in each zone to help keep the brats from falling through the grate. Then, place your brats on the aluminum foil and let them sit for 5 minutes or so to come up to room temperature.

After the brats have sat for 5 minutes, season them as you would a cooked brat.

What are the different ingredients used to make a brat?

You can choose to make the brats plain or add one or more of the following ingredients:

  • Ketchup

If you want to add ketchup, do it now. Let’s say that you take some seriously delicious homemade ketchup and rub it on your brat before grilling them.

  • Mustard

Clean the grates and apply some mustard after you grill the brats. Dijon mustard is a popular choice, but any kind of mustard will work. This will give the brats a nice yellow color and a tangy flavor that will complement the other flavors on your brat (especially if you add ketchup).

  • Horseradish

Rub some homemade or store-bought horseradish on your brat before grilling them. This will give the brats a spicy flavor that is hard to describe, but extremely enjoyable. If you’re looking for a creative way to make grilled brats stand out at a party or cookout, this is one of my all-time favorites.

  • Mayonnaise

Mayonnaise is another ingredient that you can use to give your brats a different taste. You can take some mayo and rub it on your brat before grilling them. This will give the brats a lighter flavor than traditional ketchup-mustard-horseradish, but keep in mind it has less sugar than those options so the brats won’t be as sweet (you want them sweet enough so they don’t taste like a Slim Jim).

If you want to add some delicious sweet flavor to your brats, you can use ketchup that has sugar added to it. The sugar will get caramelized on the outside of the brats while they cook and give them a wonderful flavor that almost everyone enjoys.

  • Fried Onion Flakes or Chopped Onion.

There are two ways you can add fried onions or chopped onions to your brats. The first way is to put some fried onions or chopped onion on your brat before grilling them.

The second way is to take some homemade or store-bought fried onions or chopped onion and rub it over your cooked brats after they’re done cooking.

Either of these methods will work well, but the second method will pack a bit more of a wallop, so if you choose that method, you may only want to use half of the amount that you would use for pre-grilled brats.

How to Cook the Brats with Ketchup?

Let’s say that you are going to add some ketchup to your brat. You will want to take the uncooked brat and put about a tablespoon of butter on one side. This will help the ketchup stick to the uncooked brat and also give you a nice sheen.

After you’ve put some butter on one side, add 1 heaping tablespoon of ketchup on top of it, making sure that each bite has a little bit of butter as well as ketchup.

As you’ve added a tablespoon of ketchup on each side of an uncooked brat, put the brat on the grill in the hot zone.

If you want to make sure that your brats cook as thoroughly as possible, you should make sure that they are no more than ½ inch from the heat source.

Do not cover your grill or put any lid on your grill. If you do this, the brats will steam and not cook properly. No one wants that, so keep the heat to a minimum.
