However, ask any bratwurst star and they will tell you that grilling is the best way of preparing the dish for many people. The key part of grilling is to get the required ingredients ready for the event and find the correct method to grill brats.

How Long to Grill Brats on Gas Grill

There is no ideal time to grill brats, it all depends on when they reach the desired internal temperature. However, the maximum time to grill brats is 15 to 20 minutes.

How to Grill Brats on a Gas Grill

The below-mentioned recipe will help you grill brats on a gas grill. Before discussing the recipe let us know the ingredients required that we need to assemble first.

Ingredients Required

  • 1 large onion thin sliced
  • 1 tablespoon Olive Oil
  • 4 Bratwurst
  • 4 Sandwich rolls
  • 4 Tablespoon sauces

Instructions to Follow

Step 1- Clean the Grill

The first step towards grilling the brats is to clean the grill thoroughly. If the grill is not clean definitely it will have an effect on the taste.

Step 2- Heat the Grill

When you are done cleaning the grill, it is time to heat it. If you are using a gas grill then make sure that the tank valve is open and flowing before you move to ignite the burner. This is different from a common charcoal grill which relies on lighting the coals and giving them a chance of warming before setting the brats.

Make sure to heat only one part of the grill, as it will allow you to move the brats in a cold zone and to maintain the heat balance. It will also prevent the brats from overcooking and overheating.

Step 3- Grilling or steaming

One of the basic mistakes that we do while grilling brats is not to steam them. It is essential to steam the brats before you put them on the grill for heating. Bratwursts need to get to a temperature as high as 160 degrees Fahrenheit for perfect grilling.

If you grill brats at a very high temperature then it will just split the bratwursts and also all its juice and flavor will be lost. On the contrary, lower temperature means cooking for a long time but by the time it will reach its proper temperature, it will feel and taste different because of spending too much time on the grill. Steaming helps to safely reach an appropriate internal temperature while keeping it juicy,

Step 4- Use Oil to Brush the Grill

If you wish to give brats a smoky and crispy texture then lightly coat the grates with oil. Make sure that you do not go overboard while oiling as it will just cause the oil to drip from the grates onto the grill.

You can use different types of oil to have different flavors, including sunflower or peanut oils. One of the most favorite oil for cooking is avocado as it is versatile and healthy. Make sure that the oil you use has a high smoke point (olive oil is not a good option).

Step 5- Put the Brats on the Grill

When the grill is hot and nice, it is time to put the brats on it. Lay them out vertically while making sure that they are evenly spaced so that they will get heat at an equal rate. While placing the brats ensure that you put them all at once. This will make tracking cooking progress easier for you.

Step 6- Grill them for 15-20 Minutes

Carefully reposition each brat and flip them after 3 to 5 minutes. Allow the meat to grill for 15 to 20 minutes. Do not put the lid on the top of the grill and make sure that the brats are grilling in front of your eyes.

There is no proper time for the brats to grill. It all depends on their texture, weight, and how you allow them to heat until they do not reach the desired level of internal temperature.

Therefore given the variation in the size and weights of the brats, there are likelihoods for the brats to vary in time of heating accordingly. This is where you need to use your judgment effectively rather than allowing the brats to heat according to the clock.

Step 7-Color and Texture of Brats

If we talk about a perfectly cooked bratwurst will be dull reddish-brown; the skin will seem as if it is just about to wrinkle with its firmness still intact.

If your bratwursts are turning gray or they are becoming drawn and shriveled, there are chances that you have overcooked them. You can also notice it with the crispy touch they have to them after periods of heating.

If you do not have a thermometer then you can make sure that the temperature is right by choosing a sacrificial brat and slicing it to get an idea of the color. This will determine how much more times the brats want to cook thoroughly.

Once they have the desired level of heating, remove them one by one after moving them to the cooler portion of the grill. The Bratwursts are now ready to serve.

Step 8-Serve them

You can enjoy them as a solo dish or on a steamed bun with a mustard sauce or ketchup. It’s all up to you, try different types of cuisine as well as mixing them with caramelized onions and bell peppers will present even more flavor. Or, if you really want a treat, add bacon!

You can also pair them with Salads like potato and chili and baked beans. However, whatever you try them with, ensure that you get them while they are hot.

To Wrap it Up

Grilling is the most favorite time of many people and they love to grill brats in summer. Brats are not difficult to grill the only thing important is to keep an eye on them.
