Step 1- Clean the Grill

The first step towards grilling the brats is to clean the grill thoroughly. If the grill is not clean definitely it will have an effect on the taste.

Step 2- Heat the Grill

When you are done cleaning the grill, it is time to heat it. If you are using a gas grill then make sure that the tank valve is open and flowing before you move to ignite the burner. This is different from a common charcoal grill which relies on lighting the coals and giving them a chance of warming before setting the brats.

Make sure to heat only one part of the grill, as it will allow you to move the brats in a cold zone and to maintain the heat balance. It will also prevent the brats from overcooking and overheating.

Step 3- Grilling or steaming

One of the basic mistakes that we do while grilling brats is not to steam them. It is essential to steam the brats before you put them on the grill for heating. Bratwursts need to get to a temperature as high as 160 degrees Fahrenheit for perfect grilling.

On the contrary, lower temperature means cooking for a long time but by the time it will reach its proper temperature, it will feel and taste different because of spending too much time on the grill. Step 4- Use Oil to Brush the Grill

If you wish to give brats a smoky and crispy texture then lightly coat the grates with oil. Make sure that you do not go overboard while oiling as it will just cause the oil to drip from the grates onto the grill.

You can use different types of oil to have different flavors, including sunflower or peanut oils. One of the most favorite oil for cooking is avocado as it is versatile and healthy. Make sure that the oil you use has a high smoke point (olive oil is not a good option).

Step 5- Put the Brats on the Grill

When the grill is hot and nice, it is time to put the brats on it. Lay them out vertically while making sure that they are evenly spaced so that they will get heat at an equal rate. While placing the brats ensure that you put them all at once. This will make tracking cooking progress easier for you.

Step 6- Grill them for 15-20 Minutes

Carefully reposition each brat and flip them after 3 to 5 minutes. Allow the meat to grill for 15 to 20 minutes. Do not put the lid on the top of the grill and make sure that the brats are grilling in front of your eyes.

There is no proper time for the brats to grill. It all depends on their texture, weight, and how you allow them to heat until they do not reach the desired level of internal temperature.

Step 7-Color and Texture of Brats
