How can you Cook Top Round Steaks on the Grill?

Here is the recipe along with all the ingredients and important instructions to cook top round steaks on the grill.

Ingredients

  • Oregano
  • Rosemary
  • Black pepper
  • Thyme
  • Chopped shallots
  • Garlic cloves
  • Pickled onion
  • Onion powder
  • Olive oil
  • Sprigs of fresh herbs (for garnishing)

Step: 1 Prepare the Meat

  • Cut off the Edge Fat and Silver Skin

Cutting off the edge fat and silver skin of the meat may help your steak to cook evenly as well as you may also get rid of hard-to-chew bits. You have to slide the blade of a short and sharp knife generously under the unwanted pieces of flesh and then slide the blade down to get off the fat in thin layers.

It is recommended to trim the fat consciously and in very thin layers. Cutting too quickly may end up in taking chunks of flesh too along with fat.

  • Tenderize the Meat

You might know that round steak is a tough cut or piece of meat and tenderizing it may help you in cooking it more evenly. You have to tenderize the steaks with the help of a meat tenderizer to pound them unless they look tattered but still combined.

The piece of meat must be 0.5 inches or 1.27 cm thick as you are done with tenderization. Note that it is not a necessary step, but it will surely help you in making your round steak more palatable.

  • Season your Steak

Now you have to season the steak and you may find a variety of ways to season a round steak. One of the simplest ways of seasoning is to sprinkle a pinch of kosher salt on both sides of it. However, here are some other seasoning options for you:

  • Mix an even ratio of onion powder and dried oregano with a pinch of salt and a clove of chopped garlic. The amount of these ingredients will depend on the amount of area of steak you have, and how much you want to maintain your seasoning flavor.
  • The second option is to combine 59 ml of olive oil, a sprig of rosemary, 2 halved garlic cloves, and a sprig of thyme along with a pinch of salt in a plastic bag to make a marinade.
  • Rest the Steak in the Refrigerator

As you have seasoned your steak, put it in a zipped lock bag and remove all the air bubbles from it. Place the steak in the fridge and allow it to rest there for an hour. You can also leave your steak to rest up for a night to get a better flavor as it depends on the seasoning or marinade.

Step: 2 Cooking or Grilling the Steak

  • Make 2 Heat Levels on the Grill

You have to make 2 sides, one warmer and one cooler, on your grill to cook a round steak evenly. In case you are using a charcoal grill, out all of the coals to one side.

While on a gas grill, you just have to set a single burner to medium heat. As your heat zones have been established, permit the grill to warm up completely. It may take about 5 to 10 minutes.

  • Remove the Large Chunks from the Marinade

You do not want to remove the seasonings from the steak, but the larger pieces such as bits of garlic cloves and sprigs of herbs may burn and cause an acrid taste for you. So it is better to remove the large chunks from the steak before grilling.

  • Seat the Steak

Now put the steak directly on the high heat area of the grill and allow it to cook there for 60 to 90 seconds. Then turn it over with tongs and cook it from the other side. Continue the process unless you get a crusty brown layer on both sides of your steak.

  • Move the Steak to Cooler Side

As the steak gets good sear on both sides, move it to the cooler side of the grill and cover it to cook from the inside. It may take about 5 to 10 minutes but check it continuously to ensure that it is not overcooking or burning. Turn over the steak when its internal temperature reaches about 100 degrees F.

  • Remove them from the Grill

As your steak is done with grilling, remove it from the grill and place it on a cutting board. Allow it to rest for 7 to 10 minutes, however, for keeping it warm tent it with aluminum foil.

Step: 3 Cut and Serve

Take a sharp knife to cut your steaks against the grain and slice it into various thin slices to keep it tender. Now you have to serve it with different sauces and fresh garnished vegetables. Serve the steak when it is still hot!
